Wyndham
Martineau Bay Resort -Vieques, Puerto Rico – Spa Director
Martineau Bay is a stunning luxury resort on the small Caribbean island
of Vieques, Puerto Rico. Wyndham International Inc. had successfully bid
to assume the management contract for the Development Bank of Puerto Rico
after the original builder of the resort had gone into foreclosure and
attempts by other operators to open the resort had failed. At the same
time the Puerto Rican government was looking for an investor to purchase
the facility. The challenge here was to provide first class service under
not only the difficult conditions of a relatively undeveloped island, but
also to operate under the parameters of a pending sale with a natural resistence to providing
investment capital, while presenting the facility as attractive as
possible for a potential buyer.
The spa was one of the main attractions for guests and providing impeccable
standards in services was a core goal. When I arrived some systems were
in place and the space had all the potential to substantially improve
guest services and revenue. Creating a winning team, streamlining processes,
substantially expanding the service menu and emphasizing in-house, local,
regional and national advertising were the key focus of the first 6 months.
In the process the hotel successfully attracted a series of workshops
with the Anthony Robbins group and the spa was an essential part of their
experience. We developed a tailored program to assist the transformational
process with specific treatments.
We received several visits from the leading travel and spa press and magazine
world and soon began to see articles in renowned publications. But most
of all we soon started to see returning customers within a much shorter
time span than expected, since it was still quite an adventure to get
to the island, involving either a 20 minute flight in a small Cessna or
a 2-hour ferry ride.
The facility was successfully passed on to an investor and the Spa is
not only a central focus but will be substantially expanded according
to the plans set forth by the new owner. Read

Besides running the day to day operations with a diverse team of longtime
employees, guest workers and volunteers as well as a pool of highly qualified
therapists, teachers, students and local residents the main focus was
marketing. Since resources were limited, the center had to be very independent
and self-sufficient, relying primarily on creating a unique and unforgettable
experience. Strongly fluctuating seasonal aspects of tourism as well as
the acquisition and development of an adjacent parcel of land added to
the challenge. The operation was organized as a 501(c)3 non profit Inc.
which underlined the community service aspect.
La'akea
Gardens, Hawaii - Director of Operations
La’akea Gardens is a 25 acre farm, educational facility and community
center. I was asked to step in as manager by the owner after the previous
manager had suddenly left the position. The owner wanted to substantially
reduce her financial subsidy, but also pursue the designation and ensure
that the institution remained true to its original intention. The challenge
was not only to manage current operations, but to revisit the past financial
transactions and commitments, update and fulfill obligations and design
and implement a strategy to position the operations for a sustainable
future.
La’akea Gardens has been purchased by a group intent on maintaining
and expanding on the original vision.
